SUMMARY:Innovative Discovery Series - Systems level mechanisms of memory impairment converge across a range of neurological disease
DESCRIPTION:Learning and memory impairments are frequently identified in people with a range of neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s disease\, epilepsy\, and autism spectrum disorders. These impairments have a major negative impact on quality of life and therefore it is critical that effective treatments are identified. Current approaches target disease specific mechanisms\, but this has resulted in treatments with a very modest impact. We have recognized similarities in patterns of neuronal action potential dynamics across diseases raising the hypothesis that modulation of dynamics could improve outcomes independently of underlying diagnosis. Dr. Rodney Scott\, Nemours Children’s Health\, will show data supporting this hypothesis and evidence that intervening at the level of inputs to neural systems can improve cognitive function in rodent models of neurological disease. \nLearn more \nWhen: Tuesday\, April 28\, 2026 – Noon – 1:00 P.M. \nWhere: Virtual Presentation through Microsoft Teams

SUMMARY:Innovative Discovery Series - Complex Decision-Making at Periviable Gestations
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Úrsula Guillén has dedicated her research career to advancing open values-based communication for parents facing decisions surrounding periviable deliveries. In this talk she will highlight methodological deficiencies in the literature\, that preclude adequate certainty of outcomes. She will discuss methods to facilitate shared decision-making and the iterative development of decision aids for periviability counseling. \nLearn more \nWhen: Tuesday\, February 24\, 2026 – Noon – 1:00 P.M. \nWhere: Virtual Presentation through Microsoft Teams

SUMMARY:Innovative Discovery Series - Working Smarter with PneuRip
DESCRIPTION:Respiratory Inductive Plethysmography is a method of evaluating pulmonary ventilation by measuring the movement of the chest and abdominal wall. The measurement of the thoracoabdominal motion may be used to objectively measure work of breathing. PneuRIP is a bedside\, real time tool that allows researchers to transition RIP to a clinical diagnostic tool. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how PneuRIP can be used to explain clinical observations improve the care we provide to infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The objectives of this presentation are: \n\nPresent recent studies performed by our group that used PneuRip in the neonatal patient population\nReview the benefits and limitations of Respiratory Inductive Plethysmography (RIP)\nIntroduce PneuRIP\, a software application that allows RIP to be used at the bedside\n\nLearn more \nWhen: Tuesday\, December 16\, 2025 – Noon – 1:00 P.M. \nWhere: Virtual Presentation through Microsoft Teams

SUMMARY:Innovative Discovery Series - Food Security and Stigma
DESCRIPTION:  \nFood insecurity is of increasing concern and affects millions of Americans\, yet the invisible burden of stigma often prevents individuals from accessing the nutritional support they need. This presentation explores how stigma associated with poverty\, race\, and food assistance creates barriers to food security at both structural and individual levels. Drawing on new research including the Stigma and Food Inequity Framework\, we will examine how shame\, discrimination\, and stereotype threat shape food purchasing behaviors and program participation. From people disguising themselves when using benefit cards to parents sacrificing meals for their children\, we will uncover the hidden manifestations of stigma. The talk will highlight evidence-based interventions to reduce stigma at multiple levels. \nLearn more \nWhen: Tuesday\, October 28\, 2025 – Noon – 1:00 P.M. \nWhere: Virtual Presentation through Microsoft Teams

SUMMARY:Innovative Discovery Series - Design Thinking: An Applied Introduction for Researchers
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis presentation will provide an overview of design thinking and user-centered design strategies. There will be an emphasis on integrating these approaches into applied research\, including intervention design and pilot studies. Several examples will be utilized to provide practical\, real-world insight into how researchers can leverage these approaches to innovate\, improve their programs of research\, and maximize impact. \nLearn more \nWhen: Tuesday\, February 257\, 2025 – Noon – 1:00 P.M. \nWhere: Virtual Presentation through Microsoft Teams

SUMMARY:Innovative Discovery Series - Diet Composition in Early Infancy: Impact on energy balance\, weight status\, and other health outcomes
DESCRIPTION:The early nutritional environment plays a crucial role in optimizing growth\, developing a palate for a healthy diet\, and reducing risks for disease. While human milk is the gold standard for infant nutrition\, by 4 months of age >50% of US infants are fed infant formula\, either alone or to supplement human milk. As a group\, infants who feed infant formula are more likely to experience rapid weight gain\, weigh more\, and are at greater risk for obesity\, than are breastfed infants. However\, the composition of formulas varies; thus\, formula-fed infants are not a homogeneous group. This presentation will review findings from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) that investigated the effects of two commercially available\, isocaloric formulas with different macronutrient compositions\, on weight gain\, energy balance mechanisms\, gastrointestinal microbiota\, and subsequent diet in healthy\, formula-fed infants. \nLearn more \nWhen: Tuesday\, December 17\, 2024 – Noon – 1:00 P.M. \nWhere: Virtual Presentation through Microsoft Teams

SUMMARY:Innovative Discovery Series - Creating a Graphical Logic Model
DESCRIPTION:Creating a Graphical Logic Model will introduce the basic concepts of the logic modeling process and define the elements that comprise a logic model. Participants will be taken through the process of creating a graphical logic model for a project\, including identifying project goals and key strategies and brainstorming the theory of change that links strategies to goals. Uses of a logic model\, such as its value as a communication tool\, an aid in project design\, and a foundation for project evaluation\, will be discussed\, as will methods for embedding evaluation into a project’s logic model\, including identifying indicators. A web-based logic modeling program will be demonstrated\, and examples of logic models and theories of change will be provided. Participants are encouraged to create a free Lucidchart account (www.lucidchart.com) prior to the session if they would like work within the software during the demonstration. \nLearn more \nWhen: Tuesday\, October 27\, 2024 – Noon – 1:00 P.M. \nWhere: Virtual Presentation through Microsoft Teams
