Presentation Summary: With recent support for a complete ban on cigarettes in international, federal, and state policy-setting, the context is ripe for direct evidence supporting a ban. In particular, behavioral research is needed in consideration of a ban on sales of filtered cigarettes that could reduce plastic waste due to discarded filters. In this talk, Dr. Oren reports recent work conducted examining differences observed when committed smokers smoke filtered and comparable unfiltered cigarettes in a cross-over randomized trial. He will then discuss opportunities for evidence to further inform policy regarding the possibility of banning filters from the U.S. cigarette market.
