Health Literacy and Its Impact on Surgical Outcomes
Presentation Summary: This virtual presentation will be by Dr. Yarrow Sheldon, General Surgeon, Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia, as a nod to Health Literacy month. Patients remember and understand less than half of what their doctor tells them in a visit. We should not expect people to be active participants in improving their health if they do not understand what is going on in their bodies or why it is important. Learning how to improve communication and checking the patient’s understanding is the first step to an improved medical partnership.

About the Speaker:
Yarrow Sheldon, MD, is currently a general surgeon at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia. Dr. Sheldon graduated from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. She went on to complete general surgery residency at ChristianaCare.
