There are sensitive periods in life during which nutrition and growth can have a programming or long lasting effect on later life health outcomes; infancy is one such period. Rapid weight gain in infancy is a risk factor for overweight in both child- and adulthood. This randomized clinical trial demonstrated that compositional differences in commercial infant formulas, led to differential weight gain in healthy infants in the first year of life. The energy balance mechanisms that contributed to growth differences, and the implications for current practice and future research will be discussed.
