Adolescents in Wilmington have a 3/1,000 risk of being a victim of firearm violence, and the risk for young boys and men of color within specific neighborhoods of the city is even higher.  The rapid rise in firearm related injuries in Wilmington over the past decade was investigated by the CDC; epidemic and endemic violence in cities across the US has led to new approaches & interventions in medical and social research.  Increasingly framed as both a consequence of and a contributor to social determinants of health, firearm violence presents unique challenges to healthcare systems.  This talk will review the local patterns and risk factors for firearm related assault injuries, existing best practices, strategies for harm reduction, and opportunities for Delaware’s path forward.
